The thing that struck me about the first two Jack McDevit Priscilla Hutchins books is how much care and compassion and concern the characters had for each other, while also being super excited about Science! There's a vibe and tone to these books that I really like and find somewhat unusual.
Yes! I hadn't articulated that to myself, but this is one reason they are good reads. Even in DeepSix where there are some evidently unlikeable folks, they are all working together and coming to some functional teamwork. I can overlook a ton of the dated details for the good things here, and I have to admit that space archaeology with giant mysterious monuments is absolutely my weak spot :D
